Downers Grove South and Leyden started play Friday night at opposite ends as DGS was 1-2 coming in and Leyden 2-1. The first quarter was much the possession game as Leyden controlled the clock for over 9 minutes and managed to put 7 points on the board and took a 7- 0 lead into the second. Leyden continued to mix it up as early in the second as Mickey Gulo ran 9 yards for a score to put Leyden up 14-0 and held on the rest of the quarter with good defense to stay up and go to the half up 14-0. In the third, both teams put points on the board, but Leyden's big play ability keeps them in the lead after three, 21-7. Save the best for last is the only way to describe the final 12 minutes at DGS Stadium as both teams went back and forth, penalties, turnovers, blocked kicks, this quarter had it all, DGS crawled back to a 21-13 deficit before a turnover gave them the opportunity to tie and they took full advantage. However, Leyden came right back down the field and scored a TD to make it 27-21, and the turnover bug continued to bite DGS as they fumbled at the 50 with two minutes to go, and Leyden subsequently ran the football effectively and and ran the clock out as Leyden walks away with the victory 27-21 over Downers Grove South.
