It was fitting that the running back scoring first, would set the tone for visiting Nazareth Academy with an opening 77 yard TD gallop. Eighteen carries later on a soggy Marist field turf, tailback Rudy Romanyano would amass 238 yards and four TDs, leading Nazareth (4-1) to a statement-making 33-20 East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) win. It was the Roadrunners third straight conference win and has head coach Tim Racki liking his team's chances returning to post-season play after a two-year absence.
After Romanyano's opening tally at 5:26 of the first quarter, teams would trade scores in the second and at intermission it would be a 14-7 Roadrunner lead.
Then came the third-quarter cavalcade of scoring. Marist's opening second-half kick off was promptly returned by 97 yards by Kalium Ewing giving Nazareth a two-score cushion. Less than a minute later Redhawk tailback, Peter Andreotti would reach the Roadrunner end zone from 20 yards out. Following that, and sandwiched around another Romanyano rushing TD was Marist's Ryan Meyer slipping in for a three-yard scoring run. Despite the steady rainfall, four touchdowns were tallied within six minutes of that third quarter. After that scoring onslaught, the final rain-filled stanza would only allow tears for Marist fans. Romanyano would salt it away with his final burst, a 23-yarder down the sideline for the game's final score at 2:56 of the fourth. Living up to their Roadrunner moniker, 'Naz' totaled 300-plus yards on the ground and five rushing TDs. QB Sam Poolis threw only three times completing two for 20 yards.
Marist did get another fine game from junior QB Ian Woodworth who was 17 for 36 and 196 yards. The two talented sophomore play makers, wideout Nick Weishar had eight catches for 83 yards. and Andreotti shouldered 114 yards on 19 touches.
Marist fell to 3-2 on the season and two games behind front-running Joliet Catholic Academy in the ESCC.
