Play of the game: East Aurora star Ryan Boatright (UConn) and the Tomcats pulled off the upset of the year at the East Aurora Sectional, knocking off undefeated and top-ranked Benet 60-52 in front of a soldout standing-room crowd of 4000+.
The Tomcats led 40-23 after Boatright's 3 with 6:03 to play in the 3rd quarter, but from then on Benet clawed back into the game. A free throw with 3:38 to play cut the Tomcats lead just 1 point. Then Boatright took over.
He scored on a darting, driving layup to the basket to pad the lead to 3 pts. Then came the game's critical sequence. Benet guard David Sobolewski (Northwestern) had the ball and a path to the basket, with only Boatright in his way.
Sobolewski missed the layup and Boatright scored on the other end over Benet's 7-foot center, Frank Kaminsky (Wisconsin).
"He had been passing every time he drove," Boatright said. "So I went to play the pass and he missed the layup. He never looked at the rim. He had his eyes on me the whole time."
Boatright finished with 29 pts, 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
